What is Conductive Education?

Conductive Education is a unique form of rehabilitation and special education which is beneficial for children and adults with neurologically based movement disorders.

The launch of Conductive Education is identified with the name of Dr Andras Pető, a Hungarian physician and pedagogue. He started the education of the motor-disabled children in a new carefully integrated system in 1945. Conductive education is based on the idea that despite of the damage, the nervous system still possesses the capacity to form new neural connections.

The Conductive Education is an active learning process and not a treatment or therapy, its more a lifestyle. The participants are learning components of skills, which are needed to meet the challenge of everyday's life, and they are learning to overcome their difficulties so they could become more independent. The method is child-, learning- and education based.

It requires the active cooperation, and awareness of the participants and it ensures his or her interest and motivation throughout the learning process. Any improvement is a result of hard work and requires effort from the participant.

Who is Conductive Education beneficial for?

CE is beneficial for children and adults with neurologically based movement disorders.Any disorder of movement control originating from injury to the brain or another part of the central nerve system. CE is particularly effective for:

  • Children with Cerebral Palsy, dyspraxia or spina bifida
  • Adults with Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Traumatic Brain Injuries and after Stroke condition.

The participant should be able to show basic cognitive skills and signs of understanding of verbal communication.

  • The Conductive Education program:

Group work is an essential element of Conductive Education. Our experience proves that even the most passive child becomes more active in a group; after two-three weeks, he or she shows more interest towards the environment and moves much more independently. The group plays an important part in the development of the personality and social skills of the child and also provides motivation for them.

Children/adults learn from each other, support and encourage each other. Encourage each to wait for attention or ask for help. However CE more effective in group situation, but there are conditions which needed individual settings.

During the CE program the kids or adults are carrying out exercises in lying, standing, sitting and in walking position . The tasks are built around their existing abilities. Conductive education uses music, rhythm and repetition to teach new skills for the participants during carrying out the exercises. Everybody have the time and opportunity to practice and reinforce the skills they had learned during tasks . Between the programs they are practicing and learning everyday activities such as transitioning, feeding themselves..etcTop

    Conductive Education for Children:

The method is considered complex for it involves all that can be expected from a child of the relevant age-group. Movement, speech and mental ability are not separately or consecutively but simultaneously developed by the method that demands social contact and generates emotions. This process is based on a theory that the motor-disabled child develops and learns in the same way as healthy children do, however appropriate direction and guidance are to be provided for him or her. Encourage and guide the parents how to establish CE as a lifestyle, and build into their daily routine.Top Read more about Kids

    Conductive Education for Adults:

The participants are learning components of skills and motivation , which are needed to meet the challenge of everyday life. They are learning to overcome their difficulties, in their movement problems and coordinating their body, so they could become more active and independent . They are active participants in a learning process and not a just recipients of a treatment. CE aims to regain motor control through creating new neural pathway. Read more about Adults

    The aims of Conductive Education

    Benefits of conductive education:

  • Improves mobility, which in turn allows the child/adult to live more independently
  • Builds self-esteem because the child/adult experiences success on a daily basis
  • Gain physical flexibility, coordination, stamina and independence
  • Improves trunk- and head control which are very important for basic, fundamental movements
  • Develop acceptable age appropriate behaviour.
  • Teaches daily living skills, e.g. dressing, eating and personal hygiene
  • Participants become more active
  • Improves social/verbalisation skills
  • Why Conductive Education is different than other therapies?

  • Follows an education-personality centered approach instead of a medical neuro-physiological approach
  • It aims the complex development of the personality ,including emotional and cognitive aspects which will indirectly lead to improvement in functions, rather than simply concentrating on motor skills and functions
  • Most approaches for people with neurological motor disorders work on the body and muscles to change the brain; Conductive Education works on the brain to change the body
  • The kid/adult not only learn to move , he learns to use and generalize his movements/actions
  • utilizes a holistic system throughout the day, which is integrated into the person regular daily routine
  • Group oriented
